MARACOOS in your state: Virginia

As part of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS®) and one of 11 IOOS Association RA's, MARACOOS provides vital ocean and coastal information that strengthens Virginia’s safety, economy, and coastal resilience.
๐ŸŒŠ Enhancing Maritime Safety
In partnership with Old Dominion University, MARACOOS operates four high-frequency (HF) radar stations at Virginia Beach, Cape Charles, and Cedar Island. These radars deliver real-time surface current data to the U.S. Coast Guard, cutting search areas by two-thirds and improving the speed and success of search and rescue operations.

๐ŸŒŠ Supporting Chesapeake Bay Watermen
MARACOOS powers modeling and forecasting tools that are essential to watermen and coastal communities around the Chesapeake Bay. Reliable predictions of currents and conditions help safeguard livelihoods and strengthen the regional economy.
๐ŸŒŠ Expanding Coastal Flood Monitoring
MARACOOS is collaborating with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to deploy new water-level sensors across the Middle Peninsula, Hampton Roads, the Northern Neck, the Eastern Shore, and along the James River. These sensors enhance flood forecasting, inform emergency response, and support community planning efforts.
Powered by MARACOOS: Through cutting-edge ocean observing systems and strategic partnerships, MARACOOS and IOOS equip Virginia’s communities with the information they need to plan for hazards, protect lives, and foster coastal prosperity.
