"Celebrating 26 Years of Landsat 7: A Legacy of Earth Observation"

✨26✨ years ago today, the #Landsat 7 satellite was launched into space. Originally designed as a five-year mission, the satellite surpassed all expectations and completed over 132,000 orbits around the Earth. The Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) onboard added more than 3.3 million images to the USGS Landsat archive from 1999 until science data acquisitions ended in January 2024. 
The Landsat 7 mission was pivotal in meeting the need of global Earth observations and propelled land-change science research into a new era. The technology of the ETM+ greatly expanded the capabilities for future Earth observing data application advancements.

Landsat 7’s impact allowed more than 5,000 scientific publications in 21 languages across 143 different countries, among policy documents and news, blogs, and/or patent mentions.

Launched 26 years ago on April 15, 1999, it far exceeded its five-year mission, orbiting Earth over 132,000 times and capturing more than 3.3 million images with its Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+).     This Copernicus Sentinel-3 image acquired on 19 April 2021 shows several vortical cloud patterns swirling downwind south of the Spanish Canary Islands, off the coast of northwestern Africa.   These beautiful spiral clouds, known as Von Kármán vortices, form when atmospheric circulation is disturbed by the presence of mountainous obstacles. The peculiar spiral clouds which can be seen in this image were formed as the wind airflow was deflected by the relief of the Canary Islands.   In mid-November 2024, a Scientific Support Coordinator from OR&R’s Emergency Response Division participated in a Republic of Korea - U.S. Joint Maritime Oil Spill Response Subject Matter Expert Exchange Workshop held in Busan, Republic of Korea (ROK).
