Overview

 Northeasterly winds are prevailing today, carrying volcanic pollution (SO2) to Grindavík and surrounding areas. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a warning, advising sensitive individuals to avoid outdoor exertion and keep windows closed.

 


Current Situation

 Volcanic activity has been relatively steady, but a decrease was observed at 5 am this morning. Despite this, three craters remain active, with the central crater feeding a lava flow along Mt Stóra-Skógfell.

 


Health Advisory

Residents are advised to monitor air quality in real-time on the Environment Agency’s website, loftgaedi.is, and follow guidelines to respond to gas pollution.

 

Future Expectations

Volcanic pollution is expected to continue due to prevailing winds, and residents should stay informed and take necessary precautions.

  The laboratory of Dr. Kim Holland, also known as the Shark Lab, is part of the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB). HIMB is a research institute of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, which is located on Moku o Lo’e (Coconut Island) in Kane’ohe Bay, O’ahu.   Our research group specializes in organismic and supraorganismic biology of marine organisms.
