Yesterday, NOAA’s GOES West satellite captured this visible (band 2) imagery of Hurricane Dora as it strengthened into a Category 4 storm over the eastern Pacific Ocean. Thanks to the satellite’s Geostationary Lightning Mapper, we can also see lightning flashes within the system.

Comprising five offshore sedimentary basins—Foz do Amazonas (also called Amapá Deep Water), Pará–Maranhão, Barreirinhas, Ceará, and Potiguar—this region mirrors the geology of Guyana and Suriname, where over 13 billion barrels of oil have been discovered.   The laboratory of Dr. Kim Holland, also known as the Shark Lab, is part of the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB). HIMB is a research institute of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, which is located on Moku o Lo’e (Coconut Island) in Kane’ohe Bay, O’ahu.   Our research group specializes in organismic and supraorganismic biology of marine organisms.
